Also known as a mainboard, system board or logic board is the main Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in a computer or electronic device. It serves as the central hub that connects and allows communication between all critical components, including the Central Processing Unit, Random Access Memory, Storage, Graphics Processing Unit, and peripherals.
Key Functions:
Interconnectivity - It provides the electrical pathways (traces) that enable the CPU, RAM GPU and other hardware to talk to each other.
Power Distribution - It distributes power from the Power Supply Unit to every connected component.
Component Housing - It holds and secures essential components like the CPU socket, RAM slots, chipset and expansion slots (such as PCIe).
I/O Interface - It offers ports for external devices, such as USB, HDMI, Ethernet and audio jacks.
Common Names:
Motherboard
Mainboard
System Board
Logic Board (Apple)
Mobo (informal)
Types & Sizes:
Motherboards come in various form factors to fit different cases and use cases.
ATX - Standard size for most desktop computers.
Micro-ATX - Small than ATX, offering a balance of performance and space.
Mini-ITX - Compact size designed for small form-factor builds.
Server/Embedded Boards - Designed for specialized high-performance or industrial applications.
