Is a global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP-IP) to communicate between devices worldwide. Often called a "network of networks," it connects private, public, academic, business and government networks through electronic, wireless and optical technologies, enabling the sharing of information and communication across the globe.

Key Characteristics & Components:
  • Infrastructure - It relies on physical structures like cables, routers, datacenters, cell towers and antennas, with data traveling via packet switching.

  • Governance - The Internet has no single centralized governing body; while it is theoretically decentralized, organizations like ICANN manage critical components such as IP addresses and the Domain Name System (DNS).

  • Services - While often confused with the World Wide Web (WWW), the Internet is the underlying hardware infrastructure, whereas the Web is a software-oriented service (a subnet) that uses the Internet to host websites and documents.

History:

The ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was the first wide-area packet-switched network and the precursor to the modern Internet. Established by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense, it was designed to enable resource sharing between remote computer and to create a robust, decentralized communication system capable of surviving partial network failures, such as those caused by nuclear attacks during the Cold War.

Key Characteristics:
  • Launch & Operation - The network was established in 1969 and remained operational until it was formally decommissioned in 1990.

  • Technology - ARPANET was the first network to successfully implement packet switching, a method where data is broken into small packets and sent across the network independently, rather than using dedicated circuit-switched lines. It also pioneered the use of Interface Message Processors (IMPs), which functioned as early routers.

  • First Message - The first successful message was transmitted on October 29, 1969, between a computer at UCLA and one at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). The attempt to type "LOGIN" crashed after the first two letters, but the connection was successfully established shortly after.

  • Protocols - Initially, the network used the Network Control Program (NCP). On January 1, 1983, it switched to the TCP-IP protocol suite, a standard that remains the foundation of the Internet today.

  • Innovations - ARPANET facilitated the development of numerous technologies now taken for granted, including email (first sent in 1971), file transfer (FTP), the remote login (Telnet).
