Monitor:

Is a computer output device; a screen that displays the text, images and video generated by a computer's graphics card. It receives video signals (via HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, USB-C, etc.), converts them into a picture made up of tiny pixels and shows the results so you can see and interact with what's on the computer. Common display technologies include LCD, LED (a backlit LCD) and OLED; older models used CRT (cathode-ray tube) screens.

Keyboard:

Is a primary input device used to enter text, numbers, symbols and commands into a computer or other electronic device. Modeled after the electric typewriter, it consists of an array of buttons or keys that act as mechanical levers or electronic switches. When a key is pressed, it closes a circuit and sends an electrical signal (scan code) to the computer's processor, which interprets the input and displays the corresponding character or executes a command on the screen.

Key Characteristics & Functions:
  1. Classification as an Input Device A keyboard is exclusively an input device. It sends data to the computer but does not receive data from it. The physical action of pressing keys is converted into digital signals that the computer processes. Output is handled by separate devices like monitors or speakers.

  2. Standard Layouts and Keys Most keyboards follow specific layouts to accommodate different languages and typing efficiencies:

    • QWERTY: The most common layout in English-speaking countries, named after the first six letters on the top row. It was designed to prevent mechanical typewriter jamming by separating frequently used letter pairs.

    • Other Layouts: AZERTY (France/Belgium), Dvorak, and Colemak are alternatives designed for improved typing speed or ergonomics.

    • Key Groups: A standard keyboard typically includes:

      • Alphanumeric Keys: Letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9).

      • Function Keys: F1–F12, used for specific software commands.

      • Modifier Keys: Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and Windows/Meta keys, which modify the action of other keys.

      • Navigation Keys: Arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up/Down.

      • Numeric Keypad: A separate block of number keys for fast data entry, often omitted in compact (tenkeyless) layouts.

  3. Types of Key Switches The mechanism underneath the keys determines the typing experience:

    • Mechanical Keyboards: Each key has an individual physical switch. They offer tactile feedback, durability, and are popular among gamers and typists.

    • Membrane Keyboards: Use a rubber or silicone membrane underneath the keys. They are quieter and cheaper but offer less tactile feedback.

    • Scissor Switches: Common in laptops, these provide a shorter key travel distance and a stable typing surface.

    • Virtual/On-Screen Keyboards: Displayed on touchscreens (smartphones, tablets), allowing input via touch rather than physical presses.

  4. Connection Methods Keyboards connect to devices via:

    • Wired: USB (Universal Serial Bus) or older PS/2 connectors.

    • Wireless: Bluetooth or proprietary USB radio frequency (RF) dongles.

Mouse:

Is a hand-held pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface and translates it into the movement of a cursor (pointer) on a display, letting you interact with a graphical user interface (GUI) by clicking, dragging and scrolling. It typically has left and right buttons plus a scroll wheel. It connected to the computer via USB or wirelessly through Bluetooth/radio. Modern mice use optical or laser sensors with no moving parts, while older mechanical models used a rolling ball. The device was invented by Douglas Engelbart in the 1960s with a prototype built in 1964 and became widely used with the Apply Macintosh in 1984.

Multimedia Speakers:

Are compact, self-powered (active) loudspeaker systems designed for everyday audio from computers, laptops, TVs, smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles. Unlike hi-fi separates or studio monitors, they prioritize plug-and-play convenience, small size, and clear speech/stereo imaging over extreme bass or neutral sound, and are typically powered via USB, an AC adapter or batteries.

Configuration:
  • 2.0 Two satellite speakers (left/right) | Casual listening, office, small rooms

  • 2.1 Two satellites + a subwoofer | Better bass for music, movies, gaming

  • 5.1 / 7.1 Multiple satellites + subwoofer | Surround-sound home theater setups

Key traits include built-in amplifiers, multiple connectivity options (3.5mm AUX, USB, Bluetooth, optical/HDMI on higher-end models), and simple controls like volume knobs, EQ settings, or app-based tuning. They're a cheap, easy upgrade over thin built-in device speakers for video calls, streaming, gaming, and music.
